Disk Brush vs. Strip Brush vs. Roller Brush: Which Do You Need?

Industrial brushes look simple from a distance. Up close, the wrong type on the wrong machine costs you in worn surfaces, incomplete cleaning, or conveyor downtime. Three families account for the bulk of B2B brush orders: disk brushes, strip brushes, and roller (cylinder) brushes. Each solves a different class of mechanical problem. Here is how to tell which one your application actually needs — before you order a container of the wrong profile.

Disk brushes: rotary cleaning and surface treatment

A disk brush is a flat, circular brush that mounts to a rotating shaft or hub. Think of it as an abrasive wheel made of bristles rather than grit. Disk brushes excel at surface-contact jobs where the brush spins against a floor, a workpiece, or a conveyor belt. Common applications include floor scrubbers and sweepers, scarifying and surface preparation, deburring machined parts, and conveyor belt cleaning in food and logistics facilities.

Key specifications: outside diameter (typically 13″ to 28″ for industrial machines), filament material (Nylon 6.6 for wet scrubbing, abrasive nylon for paint removal, steel wire for heavy rust), and the mounting interface — a bore, keyway, or bolt pattern that fits your machine’s drive plate. A disk brush wears from the outside in; monitoring diameter reduction tells you when to replace it.

Strip brushes: sealing, guiding, and containing

A strip brush is a long, narrow brush that mounts along a surface, edge, or channel. Instead of spinning, it works by making continuous linear contact — sealing a gap, guiding a product, wiping a surface, or blocking dust and light. Strip brushes are the workhorses of material handling: you find them along conveyor edges to prevent products from falling off, at the base of doors and machine enclosures to block dust and noise, in static-control applications where conductive filaments dissipate charge, and in food and pharmaceutical cleanrooms as hygienic seals.

Strip brushes are ordered by overall length, bristle width, trim length, and the profile of the holding channel (aluminium, galvanised steel, stainless, or plastic). Because they wear along the entire contact edge rather than at a focal point, strip brushes typically have a long service life relative to cost.

Roller (cylinder) brushes: the sweeping and finishing core

A roller brush is a cylinder with bristles radiating outward, mounted on a shaft that rotates. It is essentially a powered sweeping or finishing tool. Roller brushes are found inside street sweepers, car-wash tunnels, vegetable washing and polishing lines, glass and wood surface finishing machines, and textile and print machinery. The cylinder spins at a controlled RPM and the filament tips do the work.

The two critical choices are core diameter and filament layout. Larger diameters handle higher RPM and heavier contact; smaller diameters fit compact machine housings. Filaments can be arranged in a spiral for smooth material ejection, in rows for aggressive action, or in a solid wrap for uniform coverage. Shaft end fittings, bearings, and the direction of rotation also must match your machine.

How to choose: three questions that point to the right type

  1. Is the motion rotary or linear? Rotary contact → disk or roller. Linear contact → strip.
  2. Is the contact point stationary or does the brush travel? Stationary contact (brush fixed, surface moves past) → strip, or a roller driven by the machine. Brush travels over surface (floor scrubber) → disk.
  3. Is the job cleaning, sealing, or finishing? Cleaning → all three, but the surface geometry picks the type. Sealing → strip. Finishing (deburring, polishing, surface prep) → disk or roller, depending on whether the target is flat or cylindrical.

A quick way to narrow: if your application brings a flat brush against a flat or cylindrical surface and spins, you want a disk. If it runs continuously along a gap or edge, you want a strip. If it spins inside a housing to sweep, polish, or wash a stream of material, you want a roller. Many machines use two of the three together — a street sweeper, for example, has both a roller brush (main sweeping cylinder) and side disk brushes for kerbs.

A final check before you order

Once you know the brush family, lock the three non-negotiable details: filament type (Nylon, PP, steel, abrasive — each wears differently), mounting interface (the single most common reason a brush arrives and does not fit the machine), and operating RPM and wet/dry conditions, which determine filament diameter and trim length.
