The Hidden Cost of Wrong Brush Specifications
Municipal street cleaning is a tough job. The wrong brush material wears out faster, cleans less effectively, and costs taxpayers more over the equipment lifecycle. This guide helps municipal procurement teams specify the right brushes.
Main Broom Materials
Polypropylene (Standard)
Polypropylene is the most common material for main brooms. It provides good sweeping performance on asphalt and concrete at a competitive price point. Ideal for general street maintenance in moderate climates.
Steel Wire (Heavy-Duty)
Steel wire brooms are designed for construction sites, heavy debris, and compacted dirt. They provide aggressive cleaning but should not be used on decorative or delicate surfaces.
Mixed/Wafer Brooms
Alternating polypropylene and steel wire wafers give a balance of sweeping and scrubbing. Popular for mixed-use urban environments where both fine dust and heavier debris are present.
Side Brush (Gutter Brush) Specifications
Side brushes — also called gutter brushes — sweep debris from the edge of the road into the path of the main broom. They experience high wear rates and frequent replacement. Key specifications:
- Diameter: Typically 600–900mm
- Material: Polypropylene or nylon
- Mounting: Must match your machine brand (Johnston, Scarab, Bucher, etc.)
